I woke up this morning and little America Wyoming got on the road and headed towards Utah. I took the flaming Gorge scenic byway, which was much more beautiful than I expected it to be and eventually came to Jessen Utah and the quarry exhibit hall.
This national monument provides a history and not only of the homesteading that occurred in the north eastern part of Utah at the turn of the last century, but also the historic dinosaur fossil finds that occurred in this area. The exhibit hall has an entire wall of partially excavated fossils to see the fossils as they would be found, there’s also an opportunity for visitors to touch real fossils which I think is pretty cool.
There is a shuttle between the visitor center at the bottom and the exhibit hall higher up that provides some information about the different rock formations in the area. There are several roads to drive requiring different types of vehicles than others. I personally chose one to go see petroglyphs and one of the original homesteads to a single woman with children named Josie Morris- she lived here on tended to the land for 50 years.
This one is a little off the beaten path, but if you are in the area and are willing to go an hour to 90 minutes out of your way. I really believe it’s worth the stop.
It was about 2.5 hours to my camp ground so I headed out - little did I know I was in for a doozy of a mountain pass- Douglass Pass is Colorado was what nightmares are made of. I don’t love heights and does any rational person enjoy hairpin turns for 15 miles? Add to that needing to use the bathroom for 60 miles including the pass and it just wasn’t my afternoon.
Got to the KOA set up my tent- no big bug tent this time since it’s only a night. Made dinner- chicken instant potatoes and carrots. I could finally have a beer since I’m below 6000 ft. I learned an important lesson about myself this trip, but also the watermelon sour was just perfect for a hot night so I am glad I could enjoy it.
I ended up making a target run 1 for ac 2 in hopes of finding another small fan( sold out) and 3 to get some summer pjs that are camp ground friendly as I left mine at home. Opps!
84 degrees and dark out but I got ready for bed. My second head lamp went out so I will be charging everything up at the next stop but for now another long day done.
I had a lot of trouble sleeping at the campground last night. It’s right off Of a major road, so there was a lot of car noise all night in addition to bug bites itched so badly all on my left ankle. So at 1 AM, I made the executive decision to take a Benadryl, which allows me to go to sleep, but did not help me say asleep as I woke up three more times in the night but at least stop the itching.
