Monitoring my consumption- February

I no longer feel any pressure or rush to use up products. I have plenty, I don't NEED anything else, but I don't feel the demand to finish things up. This means I get to have more fun using products naturally.

Clothing Out:

This is the clothing I boxed up and let sit in my house for a whole month.  I am Autistic and my lack of executive functioning really shines when it comes to my home. 53 Clothing items out plus a 2 bags of Christmas decorations and 1 bag of home decor that don't match the style my husband and I have for our tree/home. Assess value based on salvation army donation guide $417.

Clothing In:

Beauty Empties:

Heated Eye Masks Type 1- These get so much warmer and last much longer than the ones I used last month. But they are also nearly 2x the cost per mask. That being said these will certainly be traveling with me in the future. $1.35 each.  I used 14 this month

Lip Sleeping Mask Seriously 1 of these little containers lasts a year.  I already have a back up so I have 2023-24 covered. $24

Beauty Declutter:

Saie Mascara Mini-  So flakey. Doesn't even make it through the work day. It came in a holiday pack- value denoted is re-purchase price- but I would not recommend this product. $16

Laura Mercier Lip Stick Mini In devotion- I love this color but it has gone off- I cannot find this color in their website, but if I can find it- I would buy it again. I enjoyed the formula and again love this color.  No price as it was a mini

Caliray Tubing Mascara Seriously an AMAZING mascara love this product. But after 3 months and a few eye issues I cannot keep using it. $13

Beauty In:

Add ons to my fab fit fun box:
2x packs of sheet masks $6 each $12 total
The Good Patch-Relax $7

Sephora Order- I used a few discount codes, but my order total was $69 and the following items were purchased:

Books (And Short Stories) I've Read (listened to) in 2023 Part 1

I listen to books. I hate READING - so the idea of reading for fun is anything but.  I have a reading disability- which I can thankfully balance by also being an auditory processor- thank GOD. I have fallen in love with listening to books. I can so vividly place myself inside the story; like it's a move and I'm on set real time as they are describing the world and moment around me.  I can listen to a good story for hours without needing a break.  In 2023 I set a goal for myself to LISTEN to 365 hours of books by the end of the year.  As I am writing this in February I am on track to hit that goal by the end of the school year.  I average 2.5 hours a day on week days and 6 hours a day on weekends.  As a teacher my weekends are me time- but instead of my normal be lazy and watch trashy tv- I am now, being lazy- listening to a good story or 4 and coloring or shopping for groceries online.  I'm still not "productive" on the weekends, but I'm not a waste either- I am growing.

I listen to most books between 1.2 and 1.4 speed- I find the pauses in people's speech to be distracting and I'd rather they not be there. I did have to slow down Different not Less to 1.0 as she like me is Autistic and doesn't pause.

When I had the goal of doing 365 hours for the year I thought I'd do 1 blog post for the year, maybe 2, but as I sit here taking a break from story number 19- I realize that would be too much to process.  So now I plan to talk about 20ish at a time.  Some are novels, some are short stories, some are collections of information, there is mostly fiction, but some non-fiction as well.  I have added the amazon links for all of these, because I use Audible- but if you are a reader please use local book stores or libraries when you can.

1. Spare By Harry Duke of Sussex - The one that started it all.  I so badly wanted to know his side, and listening to him read it gave me a joy that has continued long beyond his book.  My skill for placing myself in the space being described was both a joy and a bit scary in this book- which is written as vignettes. I realize there is a side to this story we will never hear, because of the barriers and consequences to those who may wish to tell it- namely those in direct line to the thrown- but it was nice- as someone who grew up seeing all the headlines to hear his perspective.

2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo By Taylor Jenkins Reid- The first of many books I have listened to by this author- and more importantly this narrator-whose voice has brought me into books in new and wonderful ways.  That's the hard part about listening to books- you have to be able to not just tolerate but enjoy the voice.  Within the book there is a journalist and Evelyn- when the journalist is in her own head, I find myself not enjoying the story- but Evelyn's story is a joy filled with heartache and passion and accepting ones self. Ms. Reid creates amazing stories and I'm happy to have found her.

3. Evidence of the Affair By Taylor Jenkins Reid- This short story is written entirely through letters of 2 spouses who are on the outside of an affair between their partners.

4. Talking While Female: And other dangerous acts by Teatro Luna I missed about 1/6th of this story because I do not speak Spanish- but I don't think there is a woman alive who could not relate to at least one of the short story entries.  The experiences of mental health, intimacy, abuse, and women's health, cross cultural, racial and ethnic lines.

5. Confessions of a Prairie Bitch by Alison Arngrim. In her memoir Alison shares the not so pretty family life that lead her to find a home in  Little House on the Prairie. A home which once gone she longed for. A created family that would help her find her purpose in life long after the cameras stopped rolling.

6. Mrs. Wickham by Sarah Page follows the life of Lydia Bennet (Youngest sister of Lizzie from Pride and Prejudice) It's a piece about coming into ones own and learning what she can and should ask for from her partner and what she can do herself.

7. The Natural World of Winnie-The-Pooh by Kathryn Aalto- If you don't know me personally you would not know that I love all things Winnie-the-Pooh.  Eeyore is my spirit animal and his tail is tattooed on my leg.  I have a band of stuffed animals that take the place of emotional support animals because I am allergic to all things with fur- but need something to pet and squeeze and I get anxious- which is most of the time. It was interesting to place myself in the experience of being in the place that inspired the 100 acre woods of my childhood tales and be able to imagine being there. The lovely thing is that this is a travel guide or could be used as such and I can go there some day.

8. A Mind of Her Own by Paul McLain. Madame Curie when she was just Marie Sklodowska.

9.. Agent 355 by Marie Benedict is a short story about a possible answer to who the fem fatale of the Culper Ring during the American Revolution could have been. This fictionalized account of the events brings excitement and intrigue to this point in our country's history.

10 and 11. Rivals- Books 1 and 2 by Scott McCormick- Looks at 4 pairings of "enemies" throughout history. Each pairing is about 45 minutes long and provides a brief introduction and look into their conflicts throughout time. Would be great for car rides with kids as everyone will learn something and you may discover a topic worth investigating further.

12. Smoke Signals by Marie Benedict- yes the same as Agent 355- is a quick commute length listen provides a fictionalized account of a famous author becoming intertwined with historic events of WW2 in the UK.

13. Starchild by Camille Acker. Because there is no one way to grieve.

14.Different Not Less by Chloe Hayden combines memoir with self-help book for us Neurodivergent folks.

15. Growing up Wizard by Tom Felton - Is another memoir where the magic we see on screen does not always mean reality is lovely.  We are human and the human experience doesn't really care who you are. There were some lovely stories and behind the scenes thoughts about the first books that taught me to love books and the movies that have brought me so much joy with friends throughout the years. But in the end- we are all just human trying to find our way- Magic or not.

16. One True Loves By Taylor Jenkins Reid. When you find yourself yelling at an audio book on the car ride into work and then again on the way home- you know they've got their claws into you.  I could not put this down- I was invested and in the end I was happy.

17. Women's War by Stephanie McCurry looks at 3 experiences of women during the Civil War in not so United States: 1) Women as rebels themselves and the need to redefine their role in active warfare 2) The role and legal ramifications of the Black Soldiers Wife both during and after the war and 3) the role and experience of the white southern women during reconstruction.

18. After I Do By Taylor Jenkins Reid.  Do not read this book when fighting with your spouse.  It will cause you to feel all the feelings so much bigger- just don't do it. Wait til life is good or feel free to read if you are single whenever.  Marriage isn't easy- the point is to not give up when it's hard.

19. Alone with the Stars by David Gillham is a fictionalized account of what may have happened to Amelia Earhart and the impact it had on a young girl's life. Sweet and charming short listen.

I think I will stop here for this one. I have other books I've started and not finished because they were that bad- My goal for December is to "Finish bad books". I've also got a few I'm currently working on, but they can go on the next post. As of today I've listened to 4 Days 15 hours and 41 minutes or 111.68 hours of books.

Signing off for now

Was it worth it- Jan and Feb 2022

I thought it would be interesting to look back on my beauty purchases a year later.

Green- Would buy Again

Yellow- Indifferent

Red- Avoid/No

January

Sunday Riley- Wake up with me Morning Routine Kit $95. -No longer sold

  • CEO cream and have since purchased the full size several more times- I am a big fan.
  • Turmeric Glow Drops- Currently in my use it or lose it- the smell is intense.
  • Clay Slip Cleanser- Love this product- would buy a full size
  • Pink Drink- Nothing special
  • Good Genes- I've used other products that work just as well.
  • Eye brightener- thought I lost it- rediscovered it in a clean up and am loving it.
To try a bunch of products it was fine but pricey.  Now that I know what I do and don't like, it wouldn't be worth it for me.

Sol De Janeiro Hand Sanitizer $7 - No longer available.
After years of smelling like rubbing alcohol it was a nice treat to have a nicer smelling sanitizer- used it up.

Farmacy Clean Cleansing Balm- $34 - (Now $36)
This is not the same as the scented version. It doesn't work as well and it leaves a film on my skin.  I love their original version and will continue to buy that, but this simply isn't comparable.

Innis Free SPF $15 - (Now $16)
It's an SPF, it has a white cast, it's nothing special and certainly not worth the price tag. It worked but so do drug store SPFs. I think I passed this one on to my husband.

February:

Gisuo Shampoo and Conditioner $37 and $34 respectively.
I find it interesting that the shampoo can no longer the shipped to the US- at least according to Sephora.  I still have a Bottle of shampoo that I got as a gift.  It smelled amazing, and the shampoo is fine, but I found the conditioner to not give my hair what it needed. I did use it up. I wouldn't buy it again.

Perfume Discovery Set - $14.40
Considering I've only used a few of them a few times I consider this to be a waste.  I have a firm no buy on perfumes as I don't wear them enough and already have more than I will ever use.

So if I could do these months again- I wouldn't purchase most of what I did.

Monitoring my Consumption - January

Last year I really focused on minimizing my makeup / beauty collection to what I actually reach for or have a desire to use.  I used up over 100 beauty items and decluttered over 120, but I purchased 66.

Some of those were in the regular use category- some where not. This year my collection is reasonable. It's less about using up and decluttering and more about being mindful and getting use out of what I have. I also am working to declutter other aspects of my life.  Specifically clothing/shoes/accessories.  So my monthly check ins will include a variety of things

Clothing Out: I kicked the year off by boxing up clothing and working to reduce the size of my wardrobe- which is frankly one of the most overwhelming aspects of my life- especially when I wear like 5 different outfits.

I boxed up 7 boxes this month- but it only counts if I actually get the boxes to Goodwill - and since that didn't happen they don't count.

16 items (socks and underwear) were thrown away

Clothing In:

2 Shackets - a current staple in my wardrobe because it's chilly inside my house and in my classroom

1 pair of Ugg like boots -so warm and cozy

4 new shirts (1 tank, 2 short, 1 long)

1 pair of black leggings - because I somehow have none left

1 Pair of leather flats for the summer- my old ones are on their way out the door

1 Tiara -Do I need a reason?

Beauty Empties:

Ivory Oak Sample Pumpkin- Small Sample pumpkin soap that comes with orders- No price associated.

Glow Juice Mini is a mask from Earth Harbor.  This was a roll over from December. I really like this very light weight mask.  It leaves my skin with a smooth refreshed feeling.  I got 8 uses out of this mini size- a little goes a long way. $8

Marina Mini a brightening serum drop from Earth Harbor. Another Roll over from December. I have used up a full size of this historically and knew I would enjoy it. I got about 20 uses out of the mini bottle (less than a half a dropper to do my full face) which makes this a great way to test out this product.  I wasn't so sure the value was there based on the 2 products I used up in December, but that's because for my skin I didn't love them. But as a way to test new products. this is actually a really nice little kit. $8

Karuna Skin TONE Sheet Mask- 2x It's a mask- nothing fancy not sure it does much, but I like a mask about 1x a week either sheet or wash off so I have it and it fits the bill. It came out of a fabfitfun box for Winter 2022.  $5 each

Karuna Skin DRENCH sheet mask- Similarly to the TONE mask this isn't anything fancy, but it does leave my skin feeling hydrated.  I prefer Sheet masks to wash off masks, so I am using up what I have before purchasing more. $5

Deluxe Sample of Body Wash- It's what I used on my Honeymoon- so there are serious scent memories.  No associated cost- but it's empty

Kiehl's Facial Moisturizer Sample- 7ml (0.25 oz)  I love this facial moisturizer and will probably purchase a full size of this when I run out of the moisturizers I currently have.  It is so thick and creamy and a great option for my very dry skin- especially in the winter months.  -No cost associated

Heated Eye masks I picked these up this month to do with sheet masks and used 6. I like the idea of these, but half (the fragranced ones) only lasted for 15 minutes, while the unscented ones lasted for over 30. I will try other brands as it was something that made a noticeable difference in my quality of sleep. ($4.80)

Farmacy Honey Halo Jumbo I got this years ago as a face moisturizer- but ended up not being able to use it for that. I finished it up by using it on my body. It's nice, but I'd never spend that much on a body moisturizer- I also don't like having to scoop by hand- feels less than sanitary at this point. $74

Farmacy Daily Greens Moisturizer. This came with my toner in a Christmas Bundle- Farmacy nominally assigned it a value of $15- Not sure if I feel like that's accurate. I wouldn't buy it on its own. The texture is like day old jello-it looks the part too.

Beauty Declutter:

Dove Deodorant Mini- I've been having adverse reactions to deodorant for the last several months.  I am going through every product I own and trying it out- if I react to it- I toss it. If I don't I keep it.  This was a toss. $1.19

Beauty Progress:

I am trying something new- keeping track of how many uses I have on products that rarely get used.  Once I use it 20 times I can rotate it out, but if at the end of a quarter I haven't hit those 20 times I will declutter the product.  Not all of my products are in this group but I do have several facial sprays, serums and wash off masks in pots or tubes that I'm just trying to get more use out of.

Beauty Incoming: I got myself a birthday present

Free Birthday Gift from Sephora- Farmacy mini Bundle ( 3 products)

Sol De Jainero mini body washes 2 scents $10 each

Tarte Maracuja lip plump in Honeysuckle Its like Clinique blackhoney with a cooling plumper $21

3 brands of heated Eye masks:

Mask Brand 1- Used this month $8 for 10

Mask brand 2 $11 for 15

Mask Brand 3 $19 for 14- but supposedly they get hotter and last longer.
