Summer 2022 Trainings

This is just a post on the trainings I completed this summer and if I'd recommend them.  My goal was to complete 100 clock hours between June 1st and August 25th (I start back to work on the 26th with required back to work trainings).  I exceeded my goal with 155.5 hours over 12 weeks (but taking 3 for vacation-no work at all) So I thought I'd take a moment to share what I did.  These trainings are for Washington Educators only.  Some of them are One-Offs but many are available on an ongoing basis.

WEA Trainings:

These trainings are free and are offered by the state union body. These are all synchronous zoom meetings.  10 Clock Hours total

  • Implicit Bias- Introduction and LGBTQ+ 3 Clock Hours
    • Good training- An introduction I'm hoping for more in depth trainings to come in the fall. - This training has been offered in rotation for at least the last year on the WEA PD website.
  • Using Restorative Justice Practices in Education 4 Clock hours
    • Good topic to be covering, but I don't feel the training was well run. I like getting templates and lists with ideas and the trainers actually refused to provide that when asked.  They said "We could but that's not the purpose of this training".  I don't feel like I left with any skills or enough knowledge to bring these principals into the classroom.
  • Implicit Bias- Introduction and Race & Ethnicity 3 Clock Hours
    • Definitely a introductory training-But still totally worth it.
    • I wanted to attend this prior to attending the Beyond Implicit Bias training - I'm glad I did
    • Discipline Rate tracker
      • It was really interesting and alarming to look at the difference between our district as a whole and the building I work in.
    • Used small groups effectively.
    • This training has been offered for the last 4+ years on rotation.

OSPI Trainings:

These trainings are free and are offered directly from the state- you can sign up using PDenroller.  These are a combination of Zoom Meetings and eLearning opportunities.  83.5 Clock hours total

Zoom Trainings

  • Pause for Presence: The evolution of Healing-Centered Equity in Education 3 Clock Hours
    • Group therapy time for teachers.  This was a really unique training. The realization that we need to take time for self-care and providing clock hours to do it. I wish OSPI would make this a series- I'd go every Month
  • Financial Education Novice Teacher Training Grades 6-12 6 Clock hours
    • Don't like the Novice teacher part fool you- its just for teachers who haven't gotten the financial literacy training before.  I am so glad I went. I feel like I have a clear place to pull standards from for my consumer math class as well as a bunch of resources I can use for my Math Models class when we get to our budgeting and finance unit.
    • 1 of the trainers got really easily side tracked, but the other 2 were great.  They also mailed me all of the materials on a flash drive so I can access anything we didn't cover
  • Mentor Academy 101 12 Clock Hours
    • Great Training- Provide plenty of time for active connection with other people in the training
    • I am doing this training to be a better department chair and develop a stronger team that feels safe in trying new things.
    • I wonder if this training is required for all Mentors in my district and if not why?
    • Provides Time to actually Practice the work, do observations and discuss in groups
  • Graduation Equity Webinar Series 1.5 clock hours
    • Anxiety, School Avoidance and Reengagement
    • Video Webinar Streamed live to Youtube- Minimal Engagement
    • Sit and Get Training
    • Live Captioned and Signed by an ASL interpreter
  • The Way to Staff Welling Being in Schools: Creating a Wellness Committee 1 Clock hour
    • Sit and get webinar
    • Apparently the Wellness Committees are another state requirement with no funding.
      • Not entirely sure who thought asking teachers to do more with less would improve our wellness but they were wrong.

WIDA Trainings- e Learning

  • WIDA eWorkshop: Developing Language Learning in Mathematics 4 Clock Hours
  • WIDA eWorkshop: Engaging Multilingual Learners in Science: Making Sense of Phenomena  4 Clock Hours
  • WIDA eWorkshop: Social Studies: Engaging Multilingual learners through inquiry 4 Clock Hours
  • WIDA eWorkshop: Classroom teachers: Engaging Multilingual Newcomers 2 Clock Hours
  • WIDA Microlearning: Equity Focused PLCs: A resource Guide 1 Clock Hour
  • WIDA eWorkshop: Home Languages in the Classroom 20 Clock hours
If you plan to work through the WIDA materials- Give yourself at least 30 minutes per clock hour to learn and work through the materials. It's not something you can just rush through in an hour. I download all the readings and did them over a few days and then went back and answered all the questions on a final day. That's the system that works for me as I had all of my notes and had time to think about connections before answering the questions.

I really like the interactive aspects of many of the WIDA offered trainings and did work my way through the workbooks as I did the trainings. I have a folder on my laptop of MLL supports broken down my category so I have easy access to resources during the school year.  I do think I'll bring some of the systems into my classroom next year. -Specifically templates that can easily be added to the support binder in my co-taught classes.

Other e Learning
  • Teachers working with Para Educators 25 Clock Hours
    • This has a lot of really great resources and in fact they have a para educator training that walks along side it that I will likely pull from for Para trainings next school year.
    • If you are familiar with a lot of these concepts it will not take you 25 hours
    • If working with paras is something that has been difficult for you and that you've struggled with give yourself the time to really dive into the learning.

Other Educational Districts

Available through PDenroller - These trainings do have a fee associated with the clock hours- that fee is currently $3 per clock hour.  I don't mind paying a fee if other educational districts are putting on better trainings- which they are. 46 clock hours (Cost $138)

  • Co-teaching Formats: Choosing and Implementing in Virtual and Face-to-Face settings 1 Clock hour
    • Honestly super easy refresher with some good ideas- I'd recommend for people who have never Co-taught before or 1st year partnerships.
  • Digital Navigation Services 3 Clock Hours
  • AESD: Foundations of Project Based Learning 18 STEM Clock hours
    • Really good training- Forced me to think about how to shift from Projected Oriented Learning to Project Based learning
    • Each module worked through another section of filling in a planning template
    • I left with useable materials and a plan for the first unit.
      • I'd say I'm half way done with planning the first month of school.
    • Also bonus I got the require STEM clock hours I need to renew my math Cert.
      • I can never do the STEM trainings during the school year as they conflict with Special Ed Trainings.
    • Similar to the larger WIDA trainings I downloaded the readings and did them over several days before going back and answering all the learning prompts.
  • LMSS: Level up your Tech Game 3 Clock hours
  • LMSS: Deep Dive Into Microsoft Teams for Secondary 12 Clock Hours
  • Video Conferencing with Microsoft Teams 3 Clock hours
  • AESD Professional Learning on Demand: LMS 101 Microsoft Teams 6 Clock hours
Everything to do with Microsoft teams would have been really helpful 2 years ago.  At this point the 101 and Video Conferencing were all things I felt proficient at already- could have skipped those.  The Deep Dive and Level up did teach me a few new things and certainly made me more comfortable setting up my class note book and using the features and tools imbedded in teams.  All that being said; these are a quick and easy way to get clock hours.

My District Only:

Trainings I have to do for my job or that were offered through summer institute

  • Right Response Training 16 Clock Hours
    • For those not familiar RR trainings is 3/4ths deescalation and how we shape experiences to limit negative outcomes
      • I think every single person who works with children should do this portion of the training.
    • 1/4th of the training is hands on.
      • I have not put my hands on a child in 5 years I am grateful for that, but understand the need from the district to continue to have me certified given my role.
