Dad's visit

Welp, Dad has been dropped off at the airport and god willing will soon board his flight home to St. Paul in just a bit.  This is the longest I've spent with my dad since leaving home after finishing high school, and even then we didn't spend all day everyday together for 10 days straight.  I love my dad, I own being a daddy's girl.  He raised me to have his taste in music (for the most part), his love of Tiger's baseball and an enjoyment of all things historical. So we get along, but 10 full days is a lot for any 2 people to spend together.

The road trip was nice as it provided its own agenda each day, we needed to get from point A to point B, and there were often things we (I) wanted to see along the way.  If you haven't read the blog days with my dad I suggest you do so AberdeenLemmonLittle Big HornWilco, and Glacier

But once we got home, you're still responsible for the fun of your guest.  To be honest I didn't plan that so well.  I was tired when I got home. I'd been on the road 46 days and was ready to watch horrible reality tv and relax in my bed.

Tuesday- Arrived home at lunch- I needed a nap.  I put in my laundry and took a nap.  J made a wonderful Salmon dinner for us and we walked to a local spot to get ice cream after dinner.

The first full day (Wed) dad was in town he was thankfully fairly self-sufficient.  I dropped him off in Seattle in the morning and I spent the better part of the day exploring.  He took the bus home from Seattle and I picked him up at the park'n'ride near our home.

The 2nd day, dad discovered our on site gym and got in a work out.  Day 2 was relaxed we both "needed a day" to just not do stuff.

Dad Sitting in a Stealth Jet Seat

The 3rd day we were smoked in. Between the fires in Canada, Washington and Oregon, it was not pleasant to be outside.  Which sucked because Jon had taken Friday off of work to go hiking with dad and I.  I however am an asthmatic, and smoke is not my friend.  The Museum of Flight saved the day, and is now something we will keep on our list as something more to do when guests are in town.  J and Dad probably could have spent another hour in the WW2 exhibit alone.  There are 2 main "plane" galleries,  one outside and one inside. Give yourself at least 90-120 minutes to really do justice to those 2 spaces.   We went to dinner at Salty's on night 3.  It has quickly become the place we bring guests when they are in town.  Even with the smoke it was a nice view looking back into Seattle and the food is amazing.

Day 4 we woke up to much nicer skies and decided to make a go at Mount Rainer.  We opted for Sunrise as it was only 2 hours away and we did need to get my dad

on a plane today. The two hours down was fine.  I made it 1 mile up the trail and climbed the equivalent of 25 flights of stairs.  The first part is the toughest. We got some good photos together and I decided that was enough for me.  I don't do great at altitude and it was still smokey, and my lungs told me enough, so I listened.-(It's this new thing I'm trying called listening to your body). On the way home from the hike we stopped at The Mint in Enumclaw.  It's a cute downtown area.  Will need to remember to stop there on the way home from Rainer in the future- the Italian place we walked passed smelled wonderful.  As for the Mint, they did screw up our drink order, but the food was good.  I got the grilled turkey with cinnamon apples and brie.  I really cannot turn down anything with brie.  Got home dad got cleaned up and packed and set to head home.

Day 46- HOME

After 46 days on the road, 30 different beds, over 10,000 miles driven and over 100 miles walked I've made it home.

Thank you to everyone who made this adventure possible.

To my husband for knowing I was probably crazy to and supporting me anyway.

To friends I saw along the way, you made the adventure better.

To my family for opening your homes to me, for providing meals, drinks, a bed, laundry and great conversations.

To the people following along with me on this blog, many of you have reached out and continued to provide words of encouragement, they helped, thank you.

To all the strangers, park rangers, visitors center staff, hotel clerks, bar tenders, and more who may never read this blog, thank you for the conversations, recommendations, help carrying bags, interesting facts, help taking photos, and so much more, you made thousands of miles not feel lonely.

To my mom who I talked to almost every day on the road, you were my cheerleader, the person I could vent to, and someone who was always interested in hearing the story of the day.  Thank you for keeping my spirits up always.

To my dad who did the last 2,000 miles with me.  I know it wasn't the adventure you'd planned on, but it was so much fun. Thank you for driving when you could, for conversations, for Wilco, for trying new things and going outside of your comfort-zone, for splitting the cost and for supporting me the best you could when I was having a hard time at the end.

Thank you to all of you, now I need to do laundry, eat a good meal, pop my celebration bubbly and enjoy the last few weeks of summer before we start school in person again.

Day 45- Coeur d'Alene

 Boring post day.

If you want to know how this morning went, please read the Glacier Post.

As for the drive I mostly should thank my dad. We split the drive even today and I am so grateful for that.

Our hotel is nice enough, though the sink height is for a small child. We are in suburban sprawl around Coeur d'Alene.  Tried to go out for dinner, got sick, am back in the hotel looking forward to being home tomorrow.

Glacier Days 44 and 45

Day 44- I hit 10,000 miles today!
Sore. That's a great word of the day.  Today's drive, while not long in distance was another difficult day behind the wheel.  Most of the 5 hours to our motel was wet, and much of it was steep and winding on mountain roads, the last 3 miles were gravel. This requires a lot of focus and in many cases "White knuckling" it through until there was a safe place to stop and stretch.

We are OFF THE GRID and on the reservation (Blackfoot Reservation) tonight, less than 10 miles to the Canadian border, 20 miles from the last bar of cell service for me (Verizon) and at least 30 miles from the last bar of service for dad (ATT). This place is remote, but beautiful. More about it below in the Hotel review.

We were unable to get a timed entry ticket for "Going-to-the-sun" road, so we attempted to do it after 5pm when a ticket is no longer needed. This resulted in another 90 minutes of white knuckle driving for me.  It started off okay, but the higher up and deeper in that we got the worse the weather became until we were in heavy rain and in the clouds with almost no visibility beyond my nose. We stopped at Logan Pass - which is about 1/3 into the road from St. Mary's entrance (where we came in). Dad and I split a muffin and waited for the clouds to clear enough for me to feel comfortable taking on the descent. We did not drive through the park, as we stayed on the east side- because it's closes to the Many Glaciers entrance and the walk we will take tomorrow. Hopefully the weather is better.

Okay back to the Motel. Hooks Hideaway is located about 7 miles north of Babb, MT on the Blackfoot Reservation. We arrived around 4pm and my first thought was when was the last time I got an actual room KEY? followed by, OMG it's so clean.  While it isn't much it certainly met our needs as a place to stay for the night.

The room is simple, 2 beds, a desk (no chair), a reading chair, 3 lights on the walls, a floor fan (very powerful), an electric fireplace for heat, a small bathroom with everything you'd need and nothing you don't and that was it.  There is a shared space between the rooms on each side of the motel with a mini-fridge, microwave and coffee pot.

This motel does not have wifi or access to cell service and that's okay with me. It was nice to be able to fully disconnect.  When we got back from St. Mary's it was cold and raining. I was happy to curl up in a warm dry bed and sleep until I woke up. There was no city light coming in my window in the morning, no noise, though there were at least 8 cars in the lot.

Day 45

I got 10 hours of sleep. I slept from just after 7pm until a little after 5am. I felt so rested.  I grabbed our muffins out of the car and took a few photos at first light this morning.  It is such a beautiful place.  Even though the place was so simple I would without a doubt stay here again.

Because there is nothing to do at the motel, dad and I got on early start and made our way down another awful road, to Many Glacier. Our motel is only 8 miles from the turn off to go to this entrance, which is why we stayed on the east side.  After the turn off we were only about 8 miles of some of the worst road I have ever driven- and after the last 10,000+ miles, that's saying a lot. The road is in the very early stages of being re-done, but it was actually impossible in most places to avoid potholes and ruts in the road.  The road speed was between 10 and 25 miles an hour for 8 miles, so if you are planning to do this at any point this summer- plan in extra time. We beat the construction workers on the way in, but had additional delays due to work on the way out.

Once in the park the roads are paved again and very nice. We parked at Many Glacier hotel and walked the 2.6 mile loop around Swiftcurrent Lake.  We walked clockwise on the trail, which I would recommend.  We saw very few people for the first half and saw a lot of people the second half as our trail becomes the trail head for many longer hikes.  About 2/3rd of the trail is paved, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it accessible.  Most wheelchairs I've seen are wider than the trail is, the trail isn't even in all spots, even when paved, and there is no way 2 wheelchairs could pass each other.  Additionally the two paved sections are connected by a non paved section which would make the loop impassible.  It would be 2 short out and back trails for individuals looking for a paved path on the lake.

All that said, if you are able, this is a great way to start the day.  It was very brisk this morning 46℉ I used my puffer jacket for only the 2nd time on this trip and I put on my gloves for the first time.  I also wore socks with sandals, because I wasn't going to put on hiking boots, for a paved path.

Many Glacier Swiftcurrent Loop Trail

Every step we took on the trail was a postcard moment.  The whole place is phenomenal, but it is sad to think about how much snow and ice use to be there, compared to what it looks like today.  The whole loop took us about an hour, after which we got on the road. --To find out how our last overnight on the road goes read tomorrow's blog.

Day 43- WILCO

So the concert in the evening was WILCO, but that wasn't the only thing I did today.

Garnet Ghost Town
Drummond, MT
Today was a short drive day, but the drive wasn't easy.  Washboard gravel roads to our unique stop of this leg of the journey.  Garnet Ghost Town is located on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Land just outside of Drummond, MT.  Up in the mountains on winding narrow roads lies a ghost town.  Unlike many historical sites that bring in historians and artists to bring sites back to their former glory,  Garnet is as it was left and in a state of arrested decay. It was interesting to walk around and see what was left behind and what the different structures look like.  I also purchased a garnet ring made locally. (it's my birthstone)

We arrived at our hotel and were able to get about an hour of rest before heading out for the evening. My dad has a friend from when he was growing up who lives in Missoula so we met up with them for drinks and dinner before going to the concert together.

I've met a few of my dad's friends over the years and it's always fun to watch him light up over old memories they shared.

We had drinks at PLONK-where I had a great cocktail, before heading over to Finn for dinner.  Finn is probably my favorite place in Missoula because it's on the River and has beautiful views from large windows in it's dinning room. We were eventually seated in a booth facing the river which was a wonderful way to eat dinner.

After dinner we made our way to the concert venue.  KettleHouse Amphitheater is a great venue for you and three to four thousand others, it provides an intimate setting in an outdoor venue. The back drop is also stunning and made for a magnificent sunset.

Here's my conundrum. I LOVE rock concerts, I HATE flashing and bright lights, especially during daylight when I'm also struggling with additional brightness. This made the first hour opening act portion more difficult for me so I mostly listened with my eyes closed in my seat.

The opening act Sleater-Kinney is one mildly familiar with.  They put on a good show, but it's not really my style and that's okay. They also really like a lot of flashing lights and blown out light moments, this also made it difficult for me to enjoy them.

WILCO, the reason I am here. This marks my 4th Wilco concert.  All of them have been with my dad.  Previous venues: Rock the Garden (Walker sculpture garden), Northrup Auditorium and The Orpheum.  I wore my "Raised on Wilco" shirt proudly last night because it couldn't be more true. Wilco has been a bonding tool for me and my dad and for that I am eternally grateful.

Wilco has a fairly standard routine for their live shows they rotate back and forth between the country influenced rock that I fell in love with and their more distorted music, that is finally starting to grow on me. The way in which the group has developed and evolved over the years is nothing short of spectacular; especially once you realize everything and I mean everything is written by Jeff Tweedy. The man is a prolific writer. I got to experience my FAVORITE song- Box Full of Letters which as probably my favorite lyric of all time "I just can't find the time to write my mind the way I want it to read". It was a wonderful concert in a great venue and was a great first concert post pandemic.

We got back to our hotel around midnight and I slept like a rock until I woke up around 7am.

Hotel Review Missoula Hampton Inn

Pros: Strong AC, easy phone charging station, 2 beds, tv and storage, mini fridge, microwave, baggage carts available, hot water and coffee available 24/7 in lobby,

Cons: Their breakfast boxes are awful (hard boiled eggs, yogurt I can't eat-strawberry and a stale bagel),

Day 42- Montana

I've been. on the road 42 days- that's 6 weeks

Well we were originally going to see one of my dad's friends in Big Timber for lunch, but that fell through so this morning over caffeinated beverages at Bloom & Vine in Glendive, MT we crafted a new plan and route through the Battle of Little Big Horn National Monument.

I am grateful my dad is along for this part of the trip as he has such a rich understanding of history and likes to do his research before he goes anywhere.  I highly recommend reading the information found here prior to your visit to fill in some of the background as well as help create visualizations of what you will be stopping at in the park, as it's prairie filled with grave markers. As we dive into history it's important to really process through how in so many cases again and again throughout history white Americans were often in the wrong.

This is an OVER SIMPLIFIED snapshot of how we got to the battle of little big horn- I teach special education not US History.

  • Treaty of Fort Laramie signed 1868
  • Custer sent to survey the land of the black hills within the Great Lakota Reservation.
  • Geologists found gold in the black hills
  • White people rushed to Black hills to mine for gold- Violating the Treaty of Fort Laramie
  • US tried to buy the black hills--Lakota refused the offer
  • 1875 US Dept of Indian Affairs tried to force all Lakota, Dakota and Nakota on to reservations
  • Tribes ignored Dept of Indian Affairs
  • Became a military issue
  • Custer's ego and desire for glory lead to his demise and the demise of hundreds of soldiers.
It is a BEAUTIFUL landscape.  It is historically important and interesting. It was important to me to photograph the markers that have been placed of where indigenous people died.  The permanent markers that are now there (red stone) we not placed until 1999, though wood markers had been placed nearly 50 years earlier and markers by the tribes had been placed after the bodies were removed and buried in alignment with each tribe's traditions. The memorial to the Plains tribes who fought in the Battle at Little Big Horn is beautiful, including quotes from many who were there in the battle. They were fighting to protect their way of life.

Dinner in Belgrade: Bar 3 BBQ AMAZING.  I have had BBQ many places on this trip, and this was good- especially for how far north we are.  Dad and I split the sandwich sampler: 3 sliders - Pork, Brisket and Turkey plus 2 sides- We got the Green Chili Grits (Local special) and the Hopin' John- Black eyed peas, sausage, onions and rice.  It was the PERFECT size to be shared. I had a cider from Missoula and some of dad's beer.  If you're in the Bozeman area I strongly recommend.

Airbnb Review: Belgrade, MT

Pro: Best deal $$ wise for miles, 2 sleeping spaces (and sleeping for 6), living space, mini fridge, toaster oven, gas grill, deck with chairs, coffee maker, TV, off street parking included, plenty of towels and included toiletry options in bathroom

Cons: lighting is odd-Turning off the lights in the living room turned on the lights in the bed room, no microwave, window air con in main space is very loud, other space has fans only, no tub,  Planes, Trains and Automobiles---When the host provides earplugs, that should be a RED FLAG. Situated between a railroad and an airport I'm sure this is a great place for a heavy sleeper, but it was rough for me.

Neutral: Stairs to unit- May cause issues for some people, in a suburban neighborhood near the airport

Day 41- All about the Journey

My husband has worn off on me.  I can now not sleep unless the room is cool/cold.  Dad set the thermostat to  70 last night saying it was too cold.  Falling asleep was a struggle.  I like it at 68. Yes those 2 degrees do make a difference.

Walked down to the breakfast area in the morning just to check it out. It was basic. But they did have single servings of vanilla Almond milk- so I grabbed a few for the road.

Today has many stops and A LOT of driving- Over 430 miles today--But it was all about what we did on the drive.  Glendive is a pretty sleepy town without a lot to offer-the only brewery closes at 8pm so we missed out on that one.

Petrified Wood Park
Lemmon, SD
Lemmon, South Dakota
Petrified wood park and museum
Didn't do the Museum- only the park which is free and in the center of town. I've seen a lot of petrified wood on this trip (See Previous Blog) but this was certainly the most artistic presentation.

John Lopez Art Gallery

Kokomo Gallery- John Lopez was raised on a peacock farm outside of Lemmon, his mom beams about him inside the gallery- take the time to listen to everything she has to share- it's a gift.

John started as a Bronze artist for 20 years, but for the last decade he has been working on large scale sculptures made of scrap metal, which he salvages from surrounding communities- giving the many scrap/junk yards of SD a new life.

Enchanted Highway

Enchanted Highway- Put in to try to draw tourists to the small town of Regent, ND, we actually did it backwards as we started in the south and worked our way up to 94. If you've ever driven west on 94 to Montana you passed the Flying Geese off the HW but there are 6 more massive sculptures down that road.  Since we already had to go north, this was a fun way to do it.

Roosevelt National Park-
  •  I wish the loop was complete because it would have saved me 40 minutes of drive time retracing my steps, but other than that, I have nothing to complain about.  Dad thought a few of the roads were a bit narrow and needed maintenance.
  • I saw prairie dogs, bison and wild horses in addition to breath-taking views. To those who think the mid-west is "Flat, fly over land" you clearly have never been to the Dakotas.  The Bad Lands are nothing short of amazing.

End: Glendive, MT- Wouldn't recommend it- very sleepy town, not much going on and no good beer choices after 8pm.  There was a brewery we thought about trying, but it was too late.

Hotel Review- La Quinta

Pros: Right off the highway, mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, desk, chair, plenty of lamps, night stand, tub I can soak in, extra towels in the room, convenient charging spots and plugs, black out curtains free wifi, free parking, morning breakfast bar.

Cons: Bed isn't supportive. There was a ticking noise that I didn't notice until I turned off the TV, but it was incessant. I unplugged EVERYTHING to try to find it- nothing stopped- it's still going in the morning. UGG. Also the door and blinds need a good Once...maybe even twice over with WD-40 because they are SQUEAKY and woke me up more than once.

Day 40- South Dakota

Day 40- wow-  40 days on the road.  Today was the first one I shared with anyone.  My dad thankfully was able to drive for a little over a hour combined. I was eternally grateful for the help on the road.  Roughly 8300 miles in leaving Minnesota, so I was ready for some help.

Our final stop for today was Aberdeen, South Dakota.  I wasn't expecting much, because, it's South Dakota after all, but I was pleasantly surprised by a very nice downtown area.  Clearly small town- but well maintained and still beautiful. My dad and I parked at the rear of a beautiful court house.  You can nearly always count on small towns to provide a beautiful court house.  From there I could see another beautiful building I wanted to walk to.  As we drew closer a thing of beauty emerged from behind the low lying buildings.  1st Methodist Church of Aberdeen is breath-taking.  The top of the building circular encompassed in circular glass window below the dome. We proceeded to walk through down town and saw a very busy restaurant and decided it was worth the risk- even if just for the beer.  I'm glad we stopped.  Three22 Kitchen & Cocktails was a great find.  Pretty good tap list with local options and good food choices.  Dad got a soup/sandwich combo and I got The SoDak chunks of sirloin cooked to mid-rare perfection and lightly fried with house seasoning with onion straws and 2 sauce options I am a happy camper.

We walked through the rest of downtown- found an option or 2 for breakfast tomorrow before returning back to our hotel for the night to watch baseball.  The Twins are on.

Hotel Review: Best Western Ramkota Aberdeen

Pros: Free Parking, Free Wifi, 2 Bed, Mini-fridge, Microwave, Coffee Maker, Bathtub I fit in (I'm 5'10), clean, courtyard, attached restaurant, room service available (we didn't use), pool (I didn't use), free breakfast(didn't access)

Cons: 1st floor unit, outside of downtown

Minnesota Part 2- Days 37-39

 Day 37- Sunday

Didn't sleep well last night, so I slept in this morning, rather than trying a new church with my mom.  Around 10:30 we started the 100 mile drive down to Four Daughters Vineyard in Spring Valley, MN where we met my aunt and uncle, my cousin and his wife for lunch and
wine tasting.  It has been so long since I've seen all of them (at least 3 years). It was really nice to be able to share an experience and really good food. (They say the pizza's serve 2, but we had 2 pizzas and 6 people and probably had half a pizza left over) The 4D nachos are not what I expected, but they were really good.  The only negative, is that the flights are pre-determined and I would have preferred a choose your own adventure.  My mom and I shared a white wine flight and I got a Loon Juice (Cider) to drink.  I bought a bottle of wine that I think J will be willing to share with me over salmon at home.

Today I was the driver and after about 200 miles of driving today and crossing the 8000 mile mark over all, I was just really sleepy when we got home, so I napped and ate left overs for dinner.

Day 38 Monday

Lunch with my college Besties at Pryes Brewing in North Minneapolis.  It's got a great taproom space and outdoor space, but the food was in my opinion over priced for what you got.  It's recommend the place for happy hour drinks and apps after work.

After lunch I worked my way up to their new home in the "north country" about an hour north of the city. While we drove through a lot of nothingness to get there, their home is situated in a nice neighborhood that you wouldn't be able to single out from any other suburban home. I got lots of snuggles, cuddle, reading time, princess time and love from their 2 daughters, who I feel blessed to be able to spend time with periodically in their childhoods.

Snuggles with baby

Dinner was picnic foods- Burgers, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad and sweet corn- I may have over done it on the sides, but they were really good!  In the evening we shared several of the smoothie beers I brought back from around the country.  It's always good to share good beer with good friends over good conversations.

I slept in the basement- which I am pleased to inform any of their future travelers saved me from crying baby noises, but it did not save the cat from me.  At some point in the night, the cat decided that I was a pillow and was quite content on top of me--until I flipped over and I have never heard that type of noise come out of a cat before.

Day 39- Tuesday

For breakfast I was gifted with chocolate chip pancakes (made me miss Uncle Louis- a college breakfast spot).  I got more morning cuddles and snuggles with both girls while watching the first half of Princess and The Frog.  This is a major step up from whatever dino show I got roped into the night before.

Made it back to my mom's house around noon to have 1 more day of relaxation before I start the 6 day journey home.

Minnesota Part 1- Days 33-36

 Day 33- Wednesday-

The reason I rushed to get home and did such long days was so I could go to a Tigers vs. Twins baseball game with my dad.  Having grown up in Minnesota my whole life, most people are surprised when I tell them I'm a Tigers fan, but what they don't understand, is that it wasn't an option in my family.  If you are a Drawe you are a tigers fan.  And while I have gotten married, and moved to a place with their own baseball team, I will always be a tigers fan.

That was the STRANGEST game I've ever watched.  Twins scored 7 home runs- and lost. Tigers scored 6 doubles, no home runs and won in a 17 to 14 victory.  No body pitched very well--but lots of people pitched. The strike zone was really small so there was a lot of walking today. It was also a very long game- 4 hours 15 minutes.

The length of game and slow pace of play between pitches is why so many people my age and younger don't enjoy baseball.  4 hours is a long time to sit and watch a game- even when there is as much action as we saw in a few of the innings.

After the game I went back with my mom, got my brother and had a relaxing dinner of ravioli, red sauce and a salad.

Day 34- Thursday

A relaxing day- Got up lackadaisically,  ran some errands and got into the day slowly.

Mom and I made beignets today.  I brought mix back from Cafe Du Monde and we made up them up.  I think we did really well. Mom did 90% of it, I just coated them in powdered sugar.  I actually liked the ones we made at home a lot more than the ones I had in New Orleans.  Ours were smaller and fluffier on the inside- which I find more pleasant.

There was not smoke when I went out in Bloomington this morning, but by this afternoon it was reminiscent of Seattle in the summer and not it's good qualities.  The smoke here is bad- then entire state is under an air quality warning.  AQI in the city is 153 as I am writing this (Unhealthy for all groups).  I've used my inhaler today and an upping my mask game to an N95 (left over from the end of the year- thanks work) to go out tonight.

In the evening mom and I went out to supper at Sarna's and then on to see Fridley Community Theatre's production of Mama Mia.

I had perogies and sausage for dinner. Mom had never heard of them before but I created a new fan.  I mean really potatoes, cheese and caramelized onions- its a winning combo.

I've known the Kate (playing Sophie)since she was 3 and have seen her in a variety of shows over the years, being home while she's in another one, I knew I wouldn't miss it.  Her voice is so clean and powerful, it makes watching her perform and do something she loves even better- plus the sing along at the end was great fun for me and mom!

By the time we left the show the Air quality index (AQI) had increased to 210 ( you want small numbers) which is in the very unhealthy range.  I was grateful to have an N95 that fits me well and mom let me have the air purifier in my room last night which was really helpful as well. I lived in MN for 24 out of the last 32 years and smoke like this isn't something we deal with.  Even when the boundary waters were burning when I was in college, I don't ever remember it being this bad even up on the north shore.  But I should get use to it, the rest of this trip will very likely be smoke filled.

Day 35- Friday

I woke up feeling well rested for the first time since arriving home.  Between the time zone change, another bed and pillow to get use to and the smoke it's been a little work to get adjusted. Hopefully I'll sleep this well the rest of the trip.

Minnesota's Largest Candy Store
Jordan, MN
I had breakfast at my dad's place this morning and we planned out our route and hotels/airbnbs for the remainder of the road trip.  My dad is joining me for the last leg of the trip, which is why I'm spending more time with my mom during my time at home.

Around lunch time my mom, brother and I went to Minnesota's Largest Candy Store which was nothing short of an overwhelming experience to say the least, but it was a fun activity on a smokey day. Got some Zotz and Rock Candy- nothing fancy but certainly nostalgic.

Ladies Night

This afternoon mom and I had my childhood best friend Natalie and her mom over for wine (from Mayo Winery) that I visited in California     (See Blog) and have been bringing around the country with me since DAY 4 of travel. We had cheese and meat plates and naan with hummus. It was so nice to have us all together.

After the wine and apps, Natalie and I went and tried to find shoes, we failed- we felt old. But we at least got our bearings of where to start. We went to Margaritaville and enjoyed lovely wonderful fruity drinks.

Day 36- Saturday

Going home.

Yes I am home with my family, but I grew up in Wayzata (Why-Zet-ah).  When I was growing up it was clear that much of the community had money- but it very few of the public spaces were over the top, or ostentatious.  That is not the case anymore.  I honestly didn't feel comfortable walking down lake street - I place I walked every summer as a child, teen and many years of adult hood. There is an air of pretentiousness there now, that I never felt in previous years.  Many of the older building have been torn down to make way for condos, hotels, restaurants and boutiques.  They've clearly tried to turn the downtown area into a "destination" instead of a quiet relaxed community for those who live there.  I guess everything changes eventually, but what I am thankful for is the 2 things that haven't.

The two homes I really don't need to ring the doorbell at and have permission to "just walk in" Open door policy.

Dan and Claire + Dog
Stop 1:  Kate's family (see Mamma Mia above), have been a part of my life since I started to babysit for them at 13.  In the years since they have played an active roll in my life and I have support them in theirs.  Kate is the youngest of 3 and only sister.  Dan the next is also a performer who I've been lucky enough to see on broadway- looking forward to more shows in the future and I know he is looking forward to getting back to work.  Tom is the oldest and huge Packers fan- I've learned more about football from Tom than I thought I ever needed to know! And of course her parents are wonderful and certainly a part of my village.

Stop 2: Natalie's Family.  I saw her and her mom yesterday, but I hadn't seen her dad and hoped he'd be around when I came by.  He was, but I also got a wonderful surprise of her littler brother  (E) being home, along with his girlfriend.  I've literally know E his whole life and am so proud of the man he's become.  Though when I picture him in my head he's about 7. It was a such a treat to get the whole family on my visit and to catch up on some of their adventures now that they live in a different state.

So while a lot has changed the things and people that matter really haven't. My heart is completely filled with the morning I had today. I feel very blessed to have these people in my life.

Saturday Dinner- Zweigles White hots brought back with me from Rochester so I could have 1 with my dad this summer as our NY trips didn't overlap.  My brother Sam joined us for dinner.

Signing off for now
